Why plants
Beyond looking good, live plants have a measurable effect on the people around them.
Researchers at the University of Exeter found that adding just a handful of houseplants to sparse, "lean" offices lifted employee productivity noticeably.
A University of Technology Sydney study found workers reported meaningfully lower tension and anxiety after plants were introduced to their workspace.
The 2015 Human Spaces report, covering thousands of office workers worldwide, found higher wellbeing scores in workspaces that included natural elements like plants.
NASA research first identified houseplants' ability to filter common airborne chemicals, and later studies found indoor plants can meaningfully cut indoor CO2 levels.
Employees working around natural elements scored notably higher on creativity measures than those in plant-free environments, per the Human Spaces report.
Positioned well, larger plants help absorb ambient sound, softening the background noise of a busy open office.
